Musee du Louvre or simply the Louvre museum is one of the largest and the most momentous historical museum of not only Paris but this world. The museum is housed in a number of artifacts from Europe during the medieval times. There are priceless religious pieces of art available there too. This museum is located in the Louvre Palace in Paris.

Initially it was built as a fortress in the end of the 12th century under the rule of Philip II. Even today the remnants of that fortress can be seen in the museum’s basement. The museum’s building has been expanded a number of times to make it to the Louvre palace. In 1682, this museum was chosen to be left to display the royal collections, the collection of ancient Greek art and the Roman sculptures. In the year 1692, the Louvre was occupied by Académie des Inscriptions ET Belles Lettres. Later when during the French revolution, Louver was declared to be used as a museum for displaying the masterpieces of the country. With the change of the ruling class in Paris, the museum went through a number of changes. It now is divided into 8 curatorial departments i.e. Egyptian Antiquities, Decorative Arts, Eastern Antiquities, Paintings, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities, Prints and Drawings, Islamic Art and Sculpture.

Among the Egyptian Antiquities, the museum has got 50,000 artifacts from the Nile civilization. There are scrolls, mummies, weapons, musical instruments, tools, jewelry, clothes and games from the Egyptian time there. The Eastern Antiquities mostly include archeological work from the ancient times. Ceramics, wood, ivory, miniatures, Metal ware, carpet and textiles are major part of the Islamic art. There is even a special ivory box from the 10thcentury present in the museum. The Tomb of Philippe Pot and Yombe sculpture from the 19th century are the prominent pieces among the sculptures.
